Unfortunately i only received one entry :( However i thought it was excellent so i hope people enjoy it as much as i did.

Here ya go:

Nicole fluffed her hair up and looked critically into the mirror in front of her. She was running late as ever but knew that Rubes would wait for her. They were meeting at the diner before heading into Yabbie Creek to catch a movie, Letters to Juliet hoping that a little romance would rub off into their dateless lives. Grabbing her phone and her bag she headed down the stairs of Summer Bay house. Pausing on the last step she listened carefully and then shrugged, dismissing the noise she’d thought she heard and continued into the lounge.

“Nicole.” She heard her name called and spun around looking everywhere before seeing the looming presence step out of the shadows and she screamed.

“Shut up you little fool.” He growled stepping towards her.

“No stay away from me.” Nic said backing up until she felt the back of the sofa against her legs.

“I’m not going to hurt you.” He claimed.

She lifted her hand to her throat as she looked at him and moaned feeling sick.

“Why are you here?” she found herself asking as she tried to remember where Romeo and Miles were and if they were due home. Then she thought of her phone in her bag and began to move it casually behind her back so she could get to it.

“Because I needed to see you.” He began his explanation. “I waited until you were alone Nicole.”

“I won’t be alone for much longer my friends are coming to get me.” She said quickly her eyes darting to the door.

“I already know that is a lie I’ve been here some time.” he said.

He moved over to the fridge and opened it taking out one of Miles’ beers and twisted the cap off to take a long drink.

Nic watched him her hands working on getting her phone out of her bag. She had her fingertips on the small pink phone when his sudden closing of the fridge made her jump and she dropped the phone, hearing it slip down the back of the sofa cushions. She prayed that he hadn’t noticed anything and cursed at the same time for her clumsiness.

“What do you want with me?” Nic asked boldly.

“You know who I am of course little Nicole?” he asked her.

“No.” she said. “I imagine that you were with my father’s unit.” She said looking at the tall man with the dark hair and dark eyes.

“I was.” He confirmed. “I was with Roman for a number of years until it all went wrong.”

“So you’ve come for revenge is that it? I’m sorry but that is old news.” She said with a nonchalance she was far from feeling.

“No Nicole, I’ve come to talk.” He said easing down on a stool. She heard the wood creak as it accepted his weight and settled on its legs and then she looked at him and a shiver ran down her spine.

“Who are you?” Nic asked.

“Tell me something first. What happened between your Dad and Gardy?” he asked like it was an everyday type of question.

“I don’t know.” Nic said lying.

“Come now Nicole you aren’t stupid.” He said in a quick response and although there was a compliment in the words Nic felt as though it was more like an insult had just been thrown at her.

“I don’t like your tone.” She said finally. “I think you should leave.”

“I’ll go when I’m done.” He muttered emptying his beer. “Shall I tell you I know why your Dad is in Jail?” he mused looking at her.

Nic shook her head, wondering just how to get to her phone.

“Because he killed me Nicole.” The other man said leaning forward the light falling on his face.

“Oh my god!” Nic screamed out seeing the scar on the other man’s features now his face was no longer in shadow.

“Yes Nicole.” He began speaking when he saw her lips move with no sound coming out. “I’m Mark Gillien.”

“You can’t be.” She gasped out.

He grinned and even that seemed to be threatening somehow.

“You have to go to the police and let them know you are alive.” She moaned feeling strangely light-headed.

“I can’t do that Nicole and anyway.” He stopped talking and stood up moving towards her.

“Stop there.” she cried out her voice sounding breathy and horribly weak. She lifted a shaking hand to her throat as if to draw more oxygen into her tortured heaving lungs.

“I can’t go to the police because I’m dead.” He said softly his voice coming in a sibilant hiss.

Nic’s sapphire eyes rolled back in her head and she gasped out a breath before falling in a dead faint to the hard floor below.

Mark smiled menacingly and reached down to lift her up. He held her as though her weight were nothing and lay her on the sofa. Walking back over to the kitchen her reached for a glass from the counter and tilled it with water. Stepping back to her he raised the glass and let the water pour out over her carefully made up face. She shrieked in protest and sat up wiping the cold water from her eyes.

“Sorry.” He said sounding not the least bit sorry.

“Why are you here?” She asked bitterly one hand reaching behind her. She found the phone and opened it pressing buttons on the keypad.

“I’m here because you needed to know that happened.” He stated.

“I know what happened.” Nic murmured keeping him talking.

“Your dad lifted up his gun and pulled the trigger.” Mark told her lifting his hand to trace the white scar that ran down his face and neck. “Glass from the windshield cut me and I bleed like the proverbial stuck pig.” He laughed at his own words.

“So my dad thought you were dead?” she asked.

“He was in shock. Gardy bundled my unconscious body into the back of the truck and they all drove off. When I woke up I was in the dark and in pain. Gardy kept me alive.”

“Gardy?” Nic hissed forgetting her tactic of keeping him talking in her rediscovered rage at the other man for the hurt and damage he had done.

“Yes, Gardy kept me alive. He smuggled me back to Australia and I owed him a dept. Misguided, now, I know.”

“Very misguided. Even delusional.” Nic said scathingly.

He let out a harsh sound bark of laughter and sat opposite her on the wooden coffee table.

“Took me some time to realise what he was like and what was going on.” He murmured softly.

“You mean you got mixed up in his robberies?” Nic asked quickly.

“A few banks and a couple of bottle shops.” He said equally as quickly. “So you see I can’t go to the police. I’m AWOL and a known fugitive.”

“And in the meantime my dad goes through hell thinking that he shot you.” Nic said bitterly.

“That’s why I’m here Nicole. I want you, his daughter to know the truth.” He said standing up.

“You can’t let him rot in the prison. You don’t know what its like for him.” she said angrily.

Mark looked at her and stood up.

“So you’d have me do what Princess?” he asked. “Put myself in his place.”

“You should be there.” Nic moaned putting her hand to her mouth. “You deserve to be there for what you’ve put him through.” She shouted angrily.

“What is in your other hand Nicole?” he asked noticing that she only used her left hand when she gestured.

He moved suddenly putting his hand behind around her and reaching for her hand. He rugged it towards him and found the phone.

“I suggest you run.” She muttered. “They will be on their way soon.”

He swore and resisted the urge to smash the phone. Pulling away from her he spun on his heel and moved towards the door.

“Glad we had this talk.” He said sarcastically as he ran out of the door the screen door banging against the frame.

Nic looked at her phone and hit playback on the record feature. She heard his voice come through the phone and smiled slowly before going to the kitchen and picking out the freezer bags from the kitchen drawer and used them to bag up the beer bottle and the glass he’d touched thinking about fingerprint evidence before she called the police. This had to get her Dad home and she felt something that had been missing for a long time, hope.

This was an absolutely superb concept.I spent the first half of the story wondering who this man was, what he wanted with Nicole, what the connection was to Roman and Gardy. When the revelation finally came, it was a shock yet the way it was conceived made perfect sense.

The characterisation of both of them was perfect, with Mark feeling guilty but not guilty enough to atone for what he’d done and Nicole trying to keep control of the situation despite being scared. The ending is good too, although I found it ever so slightly underwritten and wished it had been dwelt on a bit longer. It provides enough sign posts to tell the reader what happens next but gives them room to make up their own mind.

There was only one entry for the fan fic contest #12 so I have finally posted it. Please review and if anyone would like to guess at the author.....

“Tell me again why were back here” Indigo Walker removed her sunglasses and placed them on the top of her head, she focused her gaze on the sea and sighed “It’s punishment right, it has to be?” she said talking a small step away from the car and closer to the beach, she looked down and saw the residents of the small town, “This won’t do” she said looking back at her father, who just sighed and looked at her

“Indi” he said slowly “I told you, I need a job and if the only one I can get is here then were here” he told her firmly,

“It’s a lovely place, the beaches are great and the people are wonderful” he said to her, she just looked at him and huffed out a breathe

“Yeah there great!” she said sarcasm present in her tone “I mean look what happened last year, you had an affair with a school girl, I almost ended up dead, it was a blast” she walked further down the beach and something caught her eye, well someone “Look there she is, how about you go give her a big hug?” she screwed her face up at her father and took another huff in letting out again.

Sid looked to where his daughters gaze was fixed, she was right Nicole walked along the beach with a young boy, he couldn’t help but feel bad for all the trouble and grief he had caused his family, “Looks like she likes them younger now” Indi said snapping Sid out of his daydream, he looked at her again, they boy beside her was younger, he couldn’t help but feel relieved, and hope it was her boyfriend

“Kind of hot” Indi said walking away from where she was to get back into the car “Where did you say we were living?” she asked her father as he joined her in the car.

“Just up the road a bit, were not actually living in the town” he said

“Good” she mumbled “I don’t need to be any closer to these people, the city was too close for me” she moaned. They drove another few miles up the road, Sid turned the car into the entrance of Martha’s old farm, “You are joking?” Indi asked, hope beamed in her voice.

“Nope, welcome home Indi” Sid said stepping out of the car, he opened the boot and took out a few bags, “Grab these” he said

“Put those back into that car! We cannot live here” She yelled “It’s a.. A Farm!” her voice was loud and it was clear she was upset, “I can’t live on a farm! I’m a city girl” she said getting more agitated by the second

“Get over yourself, it’s not as if there’s animals, it’s only a house, and it was the only one for sale, it’s hard to buy here you know”

“Oh yeah, who wouldn’t want to live here? It’s just the perfect little town right?” she scoffed “I really cannot believe you!” she added, she grabbed her bags from the boot and made her way into the house, “Oh god this needs redecorated! And as soon as would be too late!” she said

“It has a roof and heating right? What more do you need?” Sid asked her

“Happiness would be nice” she spat “God I miss Dex!” she yelled, she slumped down on the sofa and watched as her father brought in the other bags. She went to her room and unpacked her stuff leaving her father to do the rest. An hour or so past when she decided she had had enough and needed to get out, “Going out” she yelled into the kitchen where her father was “I’m taking the car” she said grabbing the keys and leaving the house before he could object.

She drove into the little town parking by the beach, she left the car and grabbed her bag from the back seat, she made her way down to the beach and took of her dress, she walked towards the water and went for a swim, she stayed in the water for a while, wallowing in the self pity she had for herself, before she got bored and made her way towards her bag and towel.

She bumped into to someone on her way back as she was drying her hair and not paying any attention to her surrounding “Sorry” she mumbled and carried on walking

“That’s ok” he said and smiled at her, although she wasn’t looking “I’m Romeo” he said, he held out his hand but she ignored it, he was kind of cute, she said to herself when she looked at him.

“Indi” she said still continuing to walk

“Nice to meet you, are you visiting?” he asked

“Nope” she told him “My dad hates my life and made me move here” she said

“It’s not that bad, the beach is great and everyone is really friendly, you get used to it, I’m sure you will love it in not time!”

“Yeah I’m sure” she said getting over excited but in a sarcastic way, “I was here before and some skank tried it on with my dad, and him being as stupid as he is played along” she told him looking at him for more than a second this time

“Best of it was she played along as my friend while trying to get into my dad’s trousers, So yeah the people are great!”

“I’m sure that wasn’t one of the locals” he said trying to defend his little town “No one would ever do anything like that,

no one I know anyway”

She studied his face, and it clicked with her “You’d be surprised, I saw you with her on the beach earlier, Blonde, slutty, goes by the name of Nicole?” Indi said while Romeo looked at her in shock

“No way, Nic isn’t that kind of girl”

Indigo laughed “I guess you don’t know her too well” she said looking down the beach, she caught site of something

“Speak of the she devil” Romeo looked behind him and saw Nicole walking up the beach towards him “She comes near me and I swear I’ll kill her” she said

“Let me get this straight, Nic got it on with your dad?” Romeo asked, finding it difficult to take in what Indi was saying

“She’s not your girlfriend is she?” she said a laugh escaping her mouth “I’d think you would have better taste, I mean you’re hot!” she said

He shook his head “No, but she’s a friend” he said, turning round to see her inches away, he smiled and turned back to face Indigo, not quite knowing what to do.

“Indigo?” Nic asked when she was close enough to see who Romeo was talking to “Your back?” she asked

“Oh wow your smart for a skank!” she said “How did you figure that one out?”

“Sorry, it’s just I didn’t think you would be back, what are you doing here?” Nic asked, she was looking at Indi ignoring the presence of Romeo, just when she thought her life was back to being good this happened, she couldn’t let this get to her, to make her go back to all them months ago when she was in a horrible place in her life.

“Dad’s back to if that’s what you want to know, but if you even think of trying to get him in bed again, this time I won’t be so nice about it, how are you still even here? How on earth can anyone bare to have you here knowing what sort of two bit skank you are? You’re pathetic!”

“I’m not after anyone Indi” she said ignoring the rest of Indigo’s comment.

“Don’t call me that, friends call me that, your nothing to me” she said turning on her heel and walking away, not wanting to put any more effort into Nicole, she thought for a moment before turning back around, “I’ll have to catch up with you some other time” she said to Romeo, she kissed his cheek before turning around once more and walking up the beach towards where she had parked, grabbing her bag on the way.

She got into her car turned on the engine and drove away towards the farmhouse, leaving Nicole and Romeo on the beach, Romeo seemed a little confused, while Nicole felt sick at the thought of reliving those months she had buried in her mind for what she thought would be eternity.

I liked this. The dialogue rang true and so did the thoughts, the characterisation of Indigo and Sid, and Romeo and Nicole when they appeared, were spot on, with Indigo’s frustration at the situation and feelings about her previous visit.

Her final meeting with Romeo and Nicole, and her different reactions to them, was well-written and a nice contrast with what happened on the show.I did feel, however, that it seemed rather incomplete, more like the first chapter of a longer fiction than something that stood alone. But in terms of dialogue, characterisation and prose style, I felt it was spot on.

I only got one entry for this contest.... Thank you to the member who entered!

Feel free to comment and guess who the author is... :)

It Ain’t About How Fast I Get There

If Indi could have argued, she would have.

If Romeo had given her a chance to protest she would have.

But the thing was that really, neither of these things were possible.

Romeo hadn’t even told her what they were doing; just hauled her away from her shift at Angelo’s and into his beat up car and driven her to the farm where he had instructed her to pack. For the night.

Her dad was working back at the hospital and Dexter didn’t even look up from the TV when she had her overnight bag packed and was standing in the doorway. Indi just shook her head and opened the front door. She thought she might have heard her brother say something that sounded like goodbye through the wooden door.

Now they’re driving and Romeo has this smug look on his face, but every time Indi asks a question she gets a very vague answer.

“Are you ever going to tell me where we’re going?”

“You’ll see when we get there,” Romeo replies.

“Will I get a tan?” she asks hopefully.

Romeo gives her a sideways glance, eyes staying mainly on the road in front. “Seriously?”

“What? It’s important, okay?” Indi sighs. “What about food? You’d better have food back there.” She swivels around in the passenger seat and inspects the back of the car. Her overnight bag, next to Romeo’s backpack, some nondescript cardboard box, a pile of CDs. But nothing that gave her any clue as to where they were going. Romeo just ignores her and continues to stare at the road. Indi pouts. “You are so annoying.”

She sees a smile creep over his pink lips. “That hurt. Indi, you’re my best friend. Don’t you trust me?”

Indi makes a point of sighing loudly and crossing her arms over her chest. “Maybe,” she concedes. “But I’m seriously reconsidering the best friend part.”

“Ouch,” Romeo replies, clutching at his chest with his left hand dramatically. “You are just full of kind thoughts this afternoon aren’t you?”

“Well, I would be a lot kinder if you would just tell me where we are going.” A hint of a whine creeping into her voice.

Romeo just chuckles, taking his hand and placing it on her knee. It’s warm and Indi stiffens, breath hitching in her chest.

They’ve been best friends for years, friends for even longer, and in less than two months everything is going to change. They are building up to the most exciting, terrifying, nerve-wracking time of their lives. They take their final exams at the end of the month, and then its full steam ahead to university and Indi knows what that means. Romeo is aiming for the local uni at Yabbie Creek for sports science, while Indi has applied to go to the city for accounting. She knows it not impossible, but she’s fairly certain they are going to be seeing a lot less of each other. And when you’ve been practically living in each other’s pockets for the best part of two years, it’s a big adjustment. And it’ll be a big change. Summer Bay is a small town, with very few relationship prospects, but college is that much bigger, with that many more people to interact with.

And Romeo is a good looking guy, Indi knows that. Hell, he’s pretty hot, but they’re friends. Best friends. Always have been, always will be. She’s resided herself to the fact that if anything was going to happen between them it would have already. That doesn’t make it any easier.

Romeo moves his hand back onto the steering wheel and Indi wishes he didn’t.

She must have dosed off at some point between annoyance and boredom, because the next thing she knows is that she has this pain in her neck and her forehead is cold because she’s been leaning on the window for the best part of the trip. It takes her a minute to realise that they aren’t moving. She unbuckles her seatbelt and tries to get her bearings. Indi looks across about to ask Romeo why they’ve stopped but the driver’s seat is empty.

A wave of panic radiates through her body and she’s about to scream because someone has abducted Romeo, but then there’s a loud thump and she jumps, letting out a high-pitched squeal.

Romeo’s head appears in her window. “Hey, are you okay?”

Indi lets out a breath she didn’t realise she was holding and stumbles out of the car. She’s relieved for a moment, before she’s back to being annoyed again. It’s becoming quite the habit. “Where were you?” she demands.

“Calm down,” Romeo replies, wiping his hands on a rag he got from who knows where. “We got a flat tire and you were fast asleep, so I didn’t want to wake you.”

She slaps him across the arm. “I woke up and you were gone.”

“Aw,” Romeo coos, “Did you miss me?”

Romeo walks towards the back of the car and picks up some sort of tool and the flat tire. He tosses them in the boot of the car along with the dirty rag, and closes the door.

“No,” Indi replies indignantly. “But I’ve seen enough horror movies to know that this is exactly what happens right before a mass murderer appears from nowhere and hacks us to pieces. I was merely looking out for my own self-preservation.”

“Gee, thanks,” Romeo replies dryly, glancing down at his watch. “Crap. We’re so late.”

“Late for what?” Indi asks, but Romeo just shakes his head and pushes her back towards the passenger door.

“Just get in,” he tells her, before he rushes around to his side and climbs in.

Romeo’s silent for a while, just focussing on the road in front, trying not to think about the importance of this night.

He’s been planning this for so long. Waiting for the right moment, the right time so right now all he can think about is just getting there. The clock is ticking and he can sense Indi beside him, her foot tapping along with the low hum of some song on the radio. In the setting sun, her blonde hair glows, a halo of sorts, making her look almost angelic. His heart is thumping inside his chest; he can’t look at her for fear of driving straight off the road.

An easy silence falls over them both until they reach the outskirts of the city. Indi recognises the skyline as they round the corner and it looms into view. She lived here for a few years with her dad and brother before they moved back to the Bay.

But as soon as they come around the corner Romeo has to slam on his breaks.

“What the-?” he exclaims.

In front of them were cars, bumper to bumper, like a never ending chain. They were stationary, not moving in the slightest. And right now, they aren’t going anywhere either.

Indi hears Romeo swear under his breath.

“I guess there’s a traffic jam,” Indi comments.

“That you Captain Obvious,” Romeo snaps, and instantly regrets it. “I’m sorry,” he says, looking over at Indi. She’s staring at him with wide-eyes, biting down on the bottom of her lip. “I just -” He begins, but ends up just shaking his head. “Forget it.”

A car’s horn honks from somewhere in front, but the traffic goes on for kilometres, that it’s impossible to tell which one. Indi leans forward and turns up the radio.

“- traffic is backed up all the way out of the city. If you are on any of the main roads entering or leaving the CBD you are going to be there for a while. Avoid the area if you can ... Just recapping, a truck has jack-knifed on Bradfield Highway blocking off all lanes of traffic. The police are working as fast as they can to clear the area, but traffic is backed up for kilometres -”

Romeo turns the radio off, slumping into his seat and pulling on the handbrake. They aren’t going anywhere fast.

“I’m sorry,” Romeo says. It’s not really helping, but it’s all he can think of right now.

“Why are you apologising? You’re the not the one who was the driving the truck,” Indi replies.

“Yeah, but, I had all this stuff planned and now it’s all going to go to waste because we’re trapped in this heap of junk,” Romeo says angrily, thumping his fist on the dash.

“Well, that’s not helping.” Indi purses her lips and watches Romeo cautiously. She’s never seen him this frustrated. She’s not quite sure what she’s supposed to do. Especially since she still doesn’t know what the ‘stuff’ he had planned was.

Romeo sighs, letting his breath escape with a hiss. “Sorry,” he says sheepishly, looking across at Indi.

She just rolls her eyes. “Would you stop apologising already?”

Romeo opens his mouth, like his about to say sorry again, but thinks better of it. He clamps his mouth shut and sets his jaw firm.

After five minutes of absolute silence, Indi is about to go stir-crazy. “Okay, I can’t take this,” she exclaims, pulling Romeo out of his daze. “20 Questions.”

Romeo shoots her a sceptic look. “Are you serious?”

“Do I look like I’m kidding?” Indi raises her eyebrows, just daring him to try and argue.

“Fine,” Romeo reluctantly agrees, “But I want it noted from the outset that I thought this was a stupid idea.”

“Well, I don’t see you coming up with anything better,” Indi says. She looks out the front window at the stretch of cars in front of them. They haven’t moved at all. “Question One,” Indi begins, “Do you or have you ever slept with a stuffed animal?”

“What kind of question is that?” Romeo asks, cocking an eyebrow and eyeing Indi.

“Don’t answer the question with another question,” she replies.

Romeo shakes his head, slightly bemused. “Fine,” he says with a sigh, “Um, I had a bear when I was really little. He used to sit on my pillow and I felt like I could tell him anything.”

He looks over at Indi. She’s got this smile on her face that’s somewhere between amused and fond. Even with the sun setting, her face is still aglow. Her blue eyes shining, perfectly pink lips turned up and he just wants to lean over and kiss them.

The thought doesn’t surprise Romeo, in fact it just frustrates him even more because they are trapped in this stupid car, which is the most unromantic place ever. The point of this whole journey was to figure things out. To spend time with Indi outside their little friendship bubble of Summer Bay. To work out once and for all whether she felt about him the same way he felt about her.

“Okay, my turn,” Romeo quickly says before Indi can notice the small blush that has crept over his cheeks. “What was the most embarrassing nickname you’ve ever had?”

“I never had one,” Indi replies just as quickly. And because of the speed of her reply, Romeo instantly knows she’s lying. That, and she’s starting to bite the inside of her lip, which she only does when she’s fibbing. And again, Romeo is left watching her lips.

“You’re lying,” Romeo quips.

“Am not,” Indi says indignantly, but she’s failing at hiding the smirk that crosses her mouth.

“Indigo Walker, I know when you’re lying,” Romeo replies. “And the rules of 20 Questions state that the players must tell the truth.”

“Who are you? The Rule Police?” Indi says, locking eyes with Romeo.

He’s staring at her, eyes slightly unfocused. And Indi has to keep reminding herself to breathe. The car suddenly feels like it’s incredibly, small and they are sitting way too close, and maybe it’s only her but it’s getting slightly hot in here. She licks her lips for something to do, but Romeo is still staring.

“Maybe I am,” Romeo says slowly, inching closer, although he is still held in place by his seatbelt.

“And what are you going to do about it?” Indi challenges, refusing to break eye contact.

Indi has been friends with Romeo long enough to know that he never passes up a challenge. So maybe she is baiting him a little. Just so she can see what he does.

It only takes a second for him to undo his seatbelt and lean over the handbrake, his blue eyes blurring as they move out of focus.

He had every intention of leaning over and poking her in the rib, or tickling her, or something like that, just so he can watch her squirm around in her seat. But as soon as he doesn’t have his belt holding him back something takes over and Romeo is leaning in and watching as she continues to stare.

If the kiss surprises her, Indi doesn’t show it.

As their lips meet any sort of reservation Romeo may have had disappears out the window, along with anything else he may have planned for this afternoon. Indi closes her eyes and lets Romeo kiss her, and it’s like this is the best thing in the world and the most frightening all at once.

Romeo is her best friend, and they’ve always been friends. And she should be thinking about things like what happens if this doesn’t work, and what if they end up at different universities in the New Year. But now she is happy, and can’t help but let a smile creep onto her lips as she kisses him back.

When they part Indi is smiling brightly and Romeo can’t help but grin in return.

“I told you this game was a stupid idea,” he says.

“And why is it stupid again?” Indi replies, removing her belt and leaning in once more.

It takes someone honking them from behind before they realise that the jam is clear and traffic is moving again.

Very good. I usually hate the present tense, but this is done well enough not to be pretentious. This story actually made me like Romeo, I normally think he needs a kick up the bum to do anything, but at last he's been proactive!

No idea who the author is though
